Overview

The Asia Institute is GSU’s second institute, serving as an interdisciplinary hub for the study, research, and documentation of Asia and its global connections.

It promotes research across histories, economies, languages, and cultures, spanning the Indian Ocean, the Arabian Gulf, and beyond. The Institute is building its Advisory Board, recruiting faculty, and developing programs of study and research, including its inaugural conference, Global Asia: The State of Asian Studies in the 21st Century, scheduled for Fall 2026.

The Institute has appointed Dale Luis Menezes as its inaugural faculty member and Assistant Professor of History, bringing expertise in early modern South Asia and the Indian Ocean world. This appointment marks the beginning of the Institute’s growing faculty body and advances scholarship that is both locally grounded and globally relevant.
