Volume 4, Number 1 of Monsoon: Journal of the Indian Ocean Rim is now available. Published by The Africa Institute, Global Studies University, in collaboration with Duke University Press, the issue features a special section titled “Art and the Afterlives of Empire in the Western Indian Ocean.”
The issue brings together interdisciplinary scholarship on the societies, arts, and histories of the Indian Ocean rim, with contributions exploring art, empire, cinema in colonial Mauritius, ecological change in west-central Tanzania, Asian ceramics and Swahili architecture, slave trafficking in East African waters, and cultural exchange across the region.
As part of this issue, “Asian Ceramics in Dialogue with Swahili Architecture: Wangwana Trading Networks and Indian Ocean Kinships” by Stéphane Pradines and Hélène Renel is available to read for free through August 31, 2026.
Monsoon is an interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed, biannual journal that publishes original research essays and special thematic issues examining the cultural, historical, and political circumstances that have shaped, and continue to affect, the littoral societies of the Indian Ocean.
The journal is co-edited by Rogaia Mustafa Abusharaf, Professor of Anthropology at Georgetown University in Qatar, and Jeremy Prestholdt, Professor of History at the University of California, San Diego.
