The Story Behind the Name
The bookshop is named after the ancient Kingdom of Meroë, which stretched from Aswan in Egypt to Khartoum in Sudan. The kingdom’s Meroitic script, spoken and written from the 3rd century BCE to the 4th century CE, remains largely undeciphered, with only proper nouns transcribed from Egyptian sources. By choosing this name, The Africa Institute celebrates Africa’s rich cultural heritage and underscores its mission to advance scholarship and public engagement in African and diaspora studies.
