Overview

GSU’s campus in Sharjah occupies a restored mid-1970s landmark that integrates architectural heritage with contemporary spaces for postgraduate study, research, and cultural exchange.

Situated in the historic Al Manakh district, the campus is housed in the former Khalid bin Mohammed School, established in the mid-1970s as part of the UAE’s first generation of modern public educational institutions. Designed by the architecture studio Khatib & Alami under the patronage of the Ministry of Education, the building exemplifies the post-union school typology, featuring a soft orange façade, modular precast construction, vaulted forms, shaded circulation, and courtyard-centered planning.

Spanning more than 23,000 square meters, the campus has been thoughtfully renovated to preserve these architectural elements while supporting contemporary postgraduate education. The space fosters interdisciplinary collaboration, rigorous research, and student engagement, reflecting GSU’s commitment to both heritage and innovation.

Africa Hall

Africa Hall is a central, historic, and functional part of GSU’s Sharjah campus. Inaugurated in 1976, it hosted its first major event, the Arab–African Symposium, under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al-Qasimi. Renovated and reopened in 2018 with the establishment of The Africa Institute, Africa Hall now serves as a hub for conferences, symposia, lectures, film screenings, and performances, supporting both university programs and engagement with the broader Sharjah community.

Facilities

The campus supports an inclusive and dynamic academic environment. Academic and research spaces include modular classrooms, a library, and dedicated research archives. Cultural and event spaces feature galleries, exhibition areas, and Africa Hall, a historic and central venue on campus. Student life and amenities include lounges, collaborative study areas, outdoor courtyards, a campus café, and a bookshop. Additional facilities include multipurpose rooms, recreational courts, gender-segregated prayer rooms, accessible washrooms, disability access throughout campus, and parking.

Future campus expansions will include a dedicated student center, clinic, additional sports facilities, and a jogging track to further enhance opportunities for learning, recreation, and well-being.
