UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador and World Champion Poet Emtithal Mahmoud Visits The Africa Institute at Global Studies University

On June 2, 2025, The Africa Institute at Global Studies University (GSU) welcomed a special guest, Emtithal (Emi) Mahmoud — UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador and acclaimed World Champion Poet. Emi met with Sara Majdi, Director of Academic Affairs, GSU, and Binyam Sisay Mendisu, Associate Dean of The Africa Institute, GSU, to explore potential collaborations.

Emtithal Mahmoud is a renowned poet, activist, and strategist with a decade of experience in grassroots mobilization, humanitarian crisis intervention, and public-private partnerships. Named one of BBC’s 100 Most Inspirational Women, she has worked with global leaders and institutions, including President Obama, the Dalai Lama, and the UN. Emi uses poetry as a catalyst for change and has performed at prestigious venues worldwide.

Sara Majdi shared, “Emi was genuinely excited to learn about our work and the mission of The Africa Institute. She expressed strong interest in exploring ways to connect her creative and humanitarian efforts with Global Studies University’s initiatives. We look forward to potential collaborations and the possibility of working with her in the future.”
