Savitri Bisnath

Savitri Bisnath is the Senior Director of Global Policy at the Institute on Race, Power and Political Economy at The New School, USA. Previously, she served as the Senior Economist with the Surge Initiative at the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), where she led a team of economists focused on centering people, the planet, and human rights in economic policies and programs.

With over 25 years of experience, Bisnath is a feminist economist specializing in international trade, development planning, economic justice, and women’s rights from an intersectional perspective. Her work encompasses issues related to conflict and natural disasters in diverse regions, including Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, as well as the UK and the US. She is skilled in macroeconomic research and policy analysis and has successfully bridged the interests of diverse stakeholders while fostering collaboration across academic, civil society, philanthropic, and multilateral institutions.

Bisnath has authored several publications, including Global Tensions: Challenges and Opportunities in the World Economy and The Gender and Development Reader Vols. I & II. She holds a Ph.D. from Cornell University and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of California, Los Angeles. Additionally, she has dual nationality in Trinidad and Tobago and the United States of America.
